Beginning in 2000, my two kids began school, and I dropped out of fultime work with the act. I joined Music Teachers Association of California and began teaching in earnest. I also took a teaching position at Musicians Institute. My work with Smothers was primarily as pianist and conductor for their symphony gigs. AND WHAT A GREAT TIME THAT WAS! I say that because the family would join me from time to time. A good example: the picture on the right, backstage at THE KENNEDY CENTER, 2004, with THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY during three nights with the NATIONAL SYMPHONY. Every night walking to and from the gig, Tom would join us. We passed by the Watergate Hotel which had been so prominent during the heyday of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Other notable gigs included three different occasions at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL, and the memorable night in 2007 with the Austin Symphony, where my high school band director from Deer Park TX surprised me with a visit. I had no idea, nor did anyone I believe, but it was to be my last symphony gig with Tom and Dick. Tom broke the news that they would be finishing up their few remaining months of duo gigs and would then be retiring. It had been a magical ride, over in a blink. I will forever be grateful to Tom Smothers, one of the great comedic geniuses of my era, for inviting me, teaching me, and being my longtime friend and supporter. And, I thank Dick for his constant professionalism and encouragement. HELL OF A RIDE!n
